With an estimated $35 billion invested, the United Arab Emirates plans to construct the largest airport in the world.
The United Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai is set to expand five times the current Dubai International Airport (DXB). It will feature 400 terminal gates, five runways, and accommodate up to 260 million passengers annually.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, made the news in a post on X and said that all DXB operations would move to Al Maktoum “in the coming years.”
He continued by saying that the United Arab Emirates intends to develop a whole metropolis in Dubai South surrounding the airport, and that “a million people’s worth of housing will follow.”
Sheikh Mohammed added that it would be home to the top logistics and aviation companies in the world. “We are constructing a new endeavor for the benefit of future generations, guaranteeing steady and ongoing growth for our kids and their kids’ kids. Dubai will be the airport, port, metropolitan center, and new global hub of the world.”
In accordance with Emirates Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum, the airport will serve as the new home for both the airline’s flagship, Emirates, and its sibling low-cost carrier, Flydubai.
The New Airport to Support Dubai Logistics Corridor
The unprecedented move is aimed at strengthening Dubai’s prominence as one of the top aviation hubs in the world and the Dubai government’s plan to build the city as a multimodal sea-air-land logistics hub globally, known as the ‘Dubai Logistics Corridor’. This development is taking place concurrently with the UAE’s massive residential development boom.
It includes a network of roadways and railroads as well as important logistics facilities like Jebel Ali Port.
The corridor’s goals are to draw in more logistics firms, increase commerce, and establish Dubai as a significant supply chain and logistics hub that serves both domestic and international markets.
